Lithium‑ion batteries underpin modern electromobility thanks to their high energy and power density. As expectations for longer driving ranges and shorter charging times continue to rise, next‑generation battery cells must deliver improved performance without compromising safety or lifetime.

Achieving this requires new electrode materials, advanced functional components, and optimized interfaces within the cell. Thin films produced by vacuum deposition offer a powerful pathway to meeting these challenges.

VON ARDENNE concentrates on current collectors and anodes for next‑generation battery technologies. Together with research partners, we have developed effective coatings for current‑collector foils that provide corrosion protection for solid‑state battery electrolytes. With tailored layer stacks, these coatings can also function as lithophilic layers for anode‑free cell concepts.

We are also advancing the replacement of traditional aluminum or copper foils with polymer films metallized via vacuum coating. These metal‑polymer composite films help prevent thermal runaway in the event of cell damage, enhancing safety while reducing both material use and weight.

To support the scale of this rapidly growing market, we supply high‑productivity roll‑to‑roll vacuum coating systems with coating widths of up to 2.8 meters.
